Analyzing FinTech and sustainable development through the triple bottom line framework using bibliometric analysis

The present study explores the intellectual structure and thematic evolution of FinTech-enabled sustainable development through the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework. The paper highlights the use of FinTech innovations to advance sustainable development while balancing the economic (Profit), social (People), and environmental (Planet) dimensions. A bibliometric study was conducted using publications in the Scopus database. Bibliometric analysis, including publication trends, influential journals, leading authors, countries and institutions, co-authorship analysis, keyword co-occurrence analysis, and thematic mapping, was employed using Biblioshiny and VoSviewer to identify emerging directions in the field. This paper examined 3375 records extracted from the Scopus database on 28th January 2026, related to FinTech and to economic, social, and environmental sustainability between 2015 and 2026. The findings show a decent growth in FinTech and sustainable development research, with China emerging as the most influential country in the field for substantive study. The TBL-based classification reveals a concentration of study within the ‘People’ and ‘Profit’ dimensions, whereas the ‘Planet’ dimension remains relatively understudied. The field is rapidly evolving, with an average article age of approximately 2.69 years, reflecting the recent and growing scholarly interest in FinTech-enabled sustainable development. The study integrates FinTech literature with the TBL framework through a bibliometric analysis. It extends previous studies by systematically categorizing research themes across ‘People-Planet-Profit’ dimensions. The findings suggest theoretical, practical, and policy implications for promoting sustainability in the FinTech ecosystem by placing greater emphasis on green finance, climate-focused innovation, and inclusive digital financial services.
