Values and commemorative practices. The dispute over the KL Plaszów Concentration Camp memorial site

The article presents the conflict that started in 2007 in Cracow. The Cracow city authorities and activists representing the "Stop Fencing off Krzemionki" (PL: “Stop Ogradzaniu Krzemionek”) group has been fought over the project to establish the Museum – Memorial Site KL Plaszow. The conflict concerns the development of 37 hectares on which the former concentration camp was located. Representatives of the Krakow Museum and the City of Krakow are building a narrative that focuses on memory, commemoration of the victims and the taboo of the cemetery. On the other hand, the narrative of local activists emphasises the affirmation of life, the role of nature as a silent guardian of memory, and focuses on the residents' sense of exclusion from the debate. The article attempts to present the values that appear in the narratives of the conflicted parties.
