Optimization of the mooring system deployment in the one chain damaged condition

The safety factor of the mooring system and the motion response of the floating structure in the survival environmental condition are main concerns in the mooring system design and operation on the sea. In this paper, safety assessment of the mooring system in the transient stage of the line breakage is investigated. It is found that the effect of the breakage of the mooring line in the transient stage is equivalent to an unexpected external force, which can significantly reduce the safety factor of the mooring system while increasing the motion response of the floating structure. Thus, a mooring system deployment strategy in the line breakage condition is proposed to find the optimal mooring system deployment for achieving optimized mooring system performance. It can be found from results that the proposed strategy can effectively improve the safety of the mooring system and suppress the motion response of the floating structure.
