From Shadows to Clarity: Taxonomic Revision of Gryon (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) within the German Barcode of Life Project

Species of Gryon are revised as part of the German Barcode of Life (GBOL) III: Dark Taxa initiative. We recognize a total of 10 species of Gryon from Germany, all of which are redescribed: Gryon cydnoide (Priesner), G. divisum (Wollaston), G. hospes (Kieffer), G. lala Kozlov, G. lymantriae (Masner), G. misellum Haliday, G. opacum (Thomson), G. pedestre (Nees von Esenbeck), G. rubrigaster (Szabó), and G. sagax (Kieffer). Eight of these species represent new records for Germany. Additionally, two other European species are redescribed: G. moczari (Szabó), and G. szelenyii (Szabó). To facilitate the recognition of these species, an identification key for females, images of primary types, and distribution maps are provided. The following synonymies are proposed: G. brevior Kononova, new synonym of Gryon rubrigaster (Szabó); G. delucchii Mineo and Szabó, new synonym of Gryon szelenyii (Szabó); G. dichropterus Kozlov, new synonym of Gryon lymantriae (Masner); G. lena Kozlov, new synonym of Gryon szelenyii (Szabó); and G. monspeliense (Picard) new synonym of Gryon subfasciatum (Wollaston). Three species names are resurrected from synonymy: G. divisum (Wollaston), G. opacum (Thomson) and G. sagax (Kieffer). An updated diagnosis for Gryon Haliday is provided.
