Expanding the boundaries of planning history: a review of the 21st international planning history society conference, Atlanta, USA

The 21st Biennial Conference of the International Planning History Society (IPHS) was held in Atlanta in July 2026, convened under the theme ‘Atlanta Crossroads'. This theme reflected both Atlanta's history of movement and reinvention and the conference's international exchange of ideas. With the untimely passing of Prof. Stephen Ramos, the IPHS community shows resilience in organizing the conference with the help of Prof. Ellen M. Bassett. Several key topics, ranging from the rethinking of ancient planning knowledge and human-nature relations, decentring planning authority, and reframing planning across time and scale, were discussed. Information is given for the next IPHS conference in 2028, which will be hosted by Professor Clément Orillard and Professor Jannifer Buyck in Paris under the theme of ‘Planning History at the Planetary Age’.
