Urban Intelligence Nodes as AI-Enabled 6G-Ready Multi-Functional Infrastructure for Sustainable and Secure Cities: Vision and Challenges

Rapid urbanization and escalating waste generation are exerting significant pressure on existing urban infrastructure, necessitating scalable, intelligent, and multifunctional solutions. While current Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled smart bins primarily support waste monitoring and collection, their potential as integrated urban infrastructure remains largely untapped. This paper envisions the concept of Urban Intelligence Nodes (UINs), a new generation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled smart waste systems that extend beyond conventional waste management to serve as multi-functional nodes within a 6G-ready IoT ecosystem. The visioned UINs integrate AI, edge computing, and advanced wireless communication technologies to enable real-time waste classification, including hazardous object detection (e.g., explosive materials), thereby enhancing public safety and enabling timely alerts to emergency responders. In addition to safety applications, UINs are envisioned to function as distributed 6G micro base stations, environmental monitoring units for applications such as bushfire detection, and urban service platforms supporting infrastructure monitoring and aesthetic integration into city landscapes. By embedding intelligence and connectivity at the edge, UINs contribute to the realization of 6G networks as AI-native, ultra-reliable, and massively distributed systems. This position paper presents the architectural vision, enabling technologies, and key application domains of UIN-IoT, and discusses associated challenges, including security, privacy, scalability, and deployment considerations. It further highlights the transformative potential of UINs in redefining public waste infrastructure as a cornerstone of sustainable, secure, and connected smart cities.
