The reinstatement of Scaphella moslemica Hedley, 1912 under the new combination Amoria moslemica (Hedley, 1912) (Gastropoda: Volutidae) from deep water New South Wales, Australia
This paper reinstates Amoria moslemica (Hedley, 1912) from the deep water off the New South Wales coast. We demonstrate that A. moslemica has greater affinity to Amoria necopinata Darragh, 1983 from southeastern Queensland than to Amoria undulata (Lamarck, 1804) with which it is erroneously synonymised. Amoria moslemica has affinities with the fusiform A. necopinata in pattern but is larger and more ovate. Amoria moslemica can be distinguished from A. undulata by its weaker, less pronounced shoulder and concave outline without inflection, its uniformly concave columella, and acute anterior join of the outer lip and body whorl at or below the shoulder. Amoria undulata has a distinct shoulder which is more reflected in its outline. The outer lip joins at, or above, the shoulder in A. undulata. The reinstatement of A. moslemica highlights the diversity of Australian Volutidae fauna which has been neglected through taxonomic vandalism associated with the Abbottian approach to species conception used in Mollusca.
