The Fourth Causation: Universal Homeostasis and the Mechanics of Inertial Balance

Abstract This paper proposes the formalization of a fourth dimension of causality: Universal Homeostasis. Beyond established linear, retrocausal, and localized cybernetic models, Universal Homeostasis describes an automated, amoral systemic correction that occurs when a disturbance exceeds an originating system's internal regulatory capacity and threshold of inertia. By evaluating systemic ripples strictly through quantitative mass rather than qualitative intent, merit, or moral desert, this framework establishes a rigorous methodology to distinguish objective macro-resets from post-hoc human apophenia. Drawing on ecological resilience, counterfactual causation, and macro-historical transformation, the study operationalizes the Three Laws of Discernment—Objective Magnitude, Pre-existing Bias, and Unrelated Impact—paired with falsifiable criteria for measurable disturbance, demonstrable causal connection, and independently specified reorganization. Tested against comparative macro-events including the Chicxulub impact, the Black Death, the Great Oxygenation Event, and the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the framework demonstrates how the universe maintains a localized resistance to entropy. This amoral ledger operates bi-directionally: whether executing the collapse of an originating system to clear accumulated debt (Destructive Homeostasis) or forcing a generative reorganization into a new baseline (Constructive Homeostasis), its function is the restoration of structural and mathematical equilibrium.
