From Fragmented Intake to Reliable Access: Standardizing Pediatric Cardiology Second Opinions

Second opinions play a critical role in pediatric specialty care, particularly in complex conditions where diagnostic uncertainty, treatment variation, or parental concern may delay care. A pediatric cardiac center implemented a program designed to streamline intake, standardize triage, and reduce time to clinical evaluation for patients and families seeking additional expertise. Prior to implementation, second opinion requests were managed through fragmented and inconsistent workflows, limiting the ability to offer timely access or measure performance. A multidisciplinary team was established to centralize intake, expedite scheduling, and track outcomes. Performance was monitored using defined access and retention metrics. The program demonstrated sustained reductions in response and wait times, improved appointment availability within targeted access thresholds, and high rates of patient retention for ongoing cardiac care. These results suggest that formalizing second opinion workflows can improve access, enhance patient experience, and support broader organizational value without increasing clinical capacity or staffing.
