Lookahead GPT: A Unified Framework for Predictive Generation, Conversational Decision-Making, Tool Selection, Memory, Multimodal Interaction, and Future-Aware Execution

Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) systems support a broad range of tasks, including autoregressive text generation, conversational assistance, reasoning, tool use, information retrieval, coding, and multimodal interaction. However, many GPT-based workflows make decisions through sequential generation or locally selected actions without explicitly evaluating a structured set of plausible downstream outcomes before committing to a response or action. This paper introduces Lookahead GPT (L-GPT), a proposed research framework for investigating how GPT-style systems can predict, compare, and select among candidate generation steps, responses, reasoning operations, tool calls, memory updates, and external actions. The framework represents the current interaction as a state, generates candidate actions, predicts their potential future outcomes, evaluates expected utility and uncertainty, and selects an action subject to quality, latency, resource, safety, and task constraints. Lookahead may operate at token, phrase, sentence, response, dialogue-turn, tool-call, workflow, or multimodal-action levels. The framework also introduces a research-slot architecture that allows candidate ideas to be registered, implemented, tested, compared, revised, and independently replicated. We organize the framework into fifteen research areas and provide 300 concrete candidate directions. Each direction is intended to function as a distinct research placeholder with an identifier, a proposed question, an implementation pathway, and an evaluation plan. The paper does not claim that all proposed directions are novel, effective, or experimentally validated. Instead, it establishes a systematic structure for developing and evaluating future-aware GPT methods while distinguishing conceptual proposals from demonstrated results.
