Traces of Erasmus in Early Modern Latin Drama
Abstract As a pedagogue, Erasmus had a profound impact on humanist education, including the Latin dramas written for schools and read and performed by students. Many of these plays contain quotations from the Adagia ; in others, Erasmus himself or Lady Folly appears as a character. Still others share the educational principles advocated by the Rotterdam-born humanist. The use of Erasmus in Neo-Latin drama once again demonstrates the enormous impact he had on early modern European culture.
