Human Ecology in the Philippines: Applications in Food and Nutrition Security in Selected Higher Education Institutions

Food and nutrition security (FNS) is major concern for communities, academics and policy makers in developing countries. As FNS concerns are multi-dimensional and multi-scalar in nature, integrative approaches such as Human Ecology are needed to understand their complex causes and co-create solutions to address them. However, scholarly research focused on the conceptual links between Human Ecology and FNS in the Philippines are limited. In response, the study examined Human Ecology’s definition across various Colleges of Human Ecology in the country, discussed ways to strengthen its integration in FNS initiatives, and recommended areas for future research. Using qualitative research, especially desk review and focus group discussion, the study revealed that Human Ecology is characterized as an integrative, applied and solution-oriented body of knowledge that utilizes an ecological lens in examining human-environment interactions. Explicitly using Human Ecological lens, clarifying its unique value proposition, and enhancing institutional mechanisms are important in strengthening its integration in FNS-related initiatives. Conceptual, historical and applied research related to Human Ecology were recommended for future research. These findings could help guide institutional efforts, particularly in co-designing collaborative initiatives to strengthen Human Ecology theory and practice in the Philippines.
