How does green organizational culture promote green organizational citizenship behaviors? The role of organizational identification and environmental passion

Purpose This study aims to examine how green organizational culture influences employees’ green extra-role behaviours through a moderated-mediation model, in which organizational identification moderates the indirect effect of green culture on green organizational citizenship behaviours through environmental passion. Design/methodology/approach A moderated-mediation model was tested using questionnaire data collected from 309 employees across various organizations. The model proposes that an environment-oriented culture fosters environmental passion – a positive emotional state encouraging pro-environmental actions – which promotes green organizational citizenship behaviours, such as eco-civic engagement and eco-helping. Organizational identification is posited to strengthen the relationship between green culture and environmental passion. Data analysis was conducted using PROCESS for SPSS. Findings The results indicate an indirect effect of green organizational culture on green organizational citizenship behaviours via environmental passion. This indirect effect coexists with a direct effect. Furthermore, organizational identification moderates the effect of green organizational culture on environmental passion, with a significant and stronger effect on employees with higher levels of organizational identification. The effect of green organizational culture on green organizational citizenship behaviours through environmental passion varies depending on the levels of organizational identification. Originality/value This study highlights the role of green organizational culture in fostering environmental passion and extra-role green behaviours. It integrates social identity theory, self-determination theory and social exchange theory and extends the organizational culture literature by evidencing the effect of green organizational culture on pro-environmental behaviours, through environmental passion, and depending on the level of organizational identification.
