A Good-Practice Example for Teaching Generative Artificial Intelligence Competencies to (Future) Adult Educators

This article outlines the development and revision process of a good-practice example for a university seminar for adult education master’s students in Germany to teach Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) competencies. Through an examination of the discourse on the digital and GenAI divide, the necessary prerequisites for acquiring GenAI competencies are drawn upon and integrated into the seminar design. The article also traces how the module plan has evolved over the years based on evaluations and technological developments. Drawing on GenAI competency models and Freire’s pedagogy, the seminar’s primary aim is to provide students with a critical understanding of GenAI. Drawing on anonymous and personal feedback from students, the seminar has been refined continuously between 2023 and 2026, and is currently in its fifth iteration. Experience has shown that teaching a critical approach to GenAI is most effective through an examination format in which students create a future professional activity exclusively using GenAI.
