Does the market price the "national team's" exit? Central Huijin's 2026 disclosures and stock returns

This paper studies the 2026 half-year disclosure in which Central Huijin Asset Management Ltd. ("Huijin AM") left the list of the ten largest shareholders of 125 listed firms, and tests whether the market priced this "national team" exit signal in proportion to Huijin's disclosed prior holding. Using a market model to estimate abnormal returns in the disclosure window, the paper estimates the cross-sectional dose-response of abnormal returns to Huijin's disclosed first-quarter stake. The dose-response is negative and statistically significant on the disclosure day: a one-percentage-point increase in the prior stake lowers abnormal returns by 1.05 percentage points (t = −1.99, p = 0.047); over the two-day window the estimate is −0.91 (p = 0.074). In a placebo test that uses the first-quarter disclosure, the same dose-response is not statistically significant (β = −0.61, p = 0.34). The negative gradient is concentrated in low-stake and financial firms: dropping firms with stakes below 1% leaves essentially no gradient, and excluding financial firms lowers it to −0.71. The market's negative reaction to a national-team exit is significant in the event window and scales with the disclosed stake.
