Sleep Quality in Patients Undergoing Peritoneal Dialysis: Association with Dialysis Adequacy and Anemia

Introduction: Assessment of sleep quality in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis may provide valuable information for optimizing treatment strategies and improving overall well- being. This study aimed to evaluate the association between dialysis adequacy, anemia, and sleep quality in peritoneal dialysis patients. Methods: This cross-sectional investigation included 38 individuals undergoing peritoneal dialysis, all of whom were selected through a census sampling approach. Prior to participation, informed consent was obtained from each patient. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS version 22, applying descriptive measures (frequencies and percentages) together with inferential methods, including the chi-square test, independent-samples t-test, and correlation analysis. Results: The mean PSQI was 6.78 ± 4.41, indicating poor sleep quality. The highest component score was observed for sleep latency, whereas the lowest was related to the use of sleep medication. The mean PSQI score was higher in patients with anemia (7.16) than in those without anemia (7.16 ± 4.56 vs. 6.45 ± 4.35), although the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.62). No significant association was found between sleep quality and dialysis adequacy (P = 0.21). Conclusion: No significant association was observed between dialysis adequacy, anemia, and sleep quality in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis. Despite relatively adequate dialysis and hemoglobin levels, most patients exhibited poor sleep quality
