Quantitative Assessment of Acoustic Performance in Irish Classrooms

In recent years the relationship between the acoustic quality of a learning space and the learning process has received increased attention internationally. Poor acoustic conditions in classrooms make listening tasks more difficult for students and are associated with increased cognitive load during learning. While appropriate values for reverberation time and background noise in classrooms have been well established, limited studies have been conducted to assess the performance of Irish classrooms. This paper presents the results of a survey of the acoustic characteristics in both primary and secondary school classrooms in Ireland. Reverberation times and background noise levels were measured in 74 classrooms, and results were used to assess compliance with standards set by the Irish Department of Education. Results show that 70 percent of classrooms failed to meet the required mid-frequency reverberation time, while 38 percent exceeded the recommended background noise limit of 35 dB(A). A quadrant analysis revealed that 32\% of classrooms failed both criteria simultaneously, highlighting environments where speech intelligibility is most compromised. Classrooms constructed after 2013 performed significantly better in terms of reverberation control, although low-frequency reverberation remained elevated across all classrooms. Spectral analysis of the best-performing classrooms enabled the identification of frequency-dependent target limits derived from measured data. Overall, the results underscore the need for improved acoustic design and targeted retrofit strategies, particularly for older classrooms, to ensure equitable access to acoustically supportive learning environments for all students.
