Selecting A Preservative for a Cosmetic Formulation: A case study
This case study provides students with hands-on experience in using chemical hazard data (ChemFORWARD and safety data sheets) and other metrics to define a formulation problem by considering the underlying chemistry, key stakeholders, and potential human and environmental impacts. Students evaluate three preservatives based on cost, performance, and human and environmental hazards to determine the best option for a cosmetic formulation. This process highlights the interplay of chemical, environmental health, and business considerations involved in producing safer, greener innovations, a skill expected of chemistry graduates as outlined in the ACS Guidelines for Bachelor's Degree Programs.
