Brief Neurobehavioral and Sleep Surveillance in Isolated, Confined and Extreme (ICE) Environments: Premise, Review Question and Working Conceptual Framework for a PRISMA-ScR Scoping Review

Background. Long-duration exploration missions and terrestrial isolated, confined and extreme (ICE) settings require frequent, low-burden monitoring of sleep and neurobehavioral state without on-site specialists. Brief tools exist, but settings measure differently and interpret results against population norms that may transfer poorly across people, cultures and devices. Objective. This working paper sets out the premise, review question, conceptual framework and scope decisions for a scoping review conducted under PRISMA-ScR. Planned approach. The review will map brief (≤10 min) neurobehavioral tests and passive or brief self-report sleep and circadian measures used in ICE environments and analogs; chart properties relevant to repeated use, such as test–retest reliability, practice effects and sensitivity to sleep loss; quantify how often individual-level change is analyzed; and describe the populations studied. Relevance. The work responds to NASA Human Research Roadmap Gap BMed-102 and builds on individualized prediction of vigilance in astronauts. Version 0.1 is a working paper for discussion with the review team prior to OSF protocol registration. English and Spanish versions included. The OSDR Analysis Working Groups are volunteer groups separate from OSDR; this document does not represent an official position of NASA.
