The Significance of Bell Ringing in the Funeral Traditions of Christian Denominations
This article offers an analysis of the sources that mention the use of bells in the traditions of Christian denominations, aiming to determine the meaning of the bell-ringing practices that have survived to the present day. Special attention is given to the mourning bell-ringing tradition in the funeral rites of Christian denominations. The analysis of sources revealed that the connotations of bells vary among different Christian denominations. The Orthodox alone have defined the function and significance of bells in an ecclesiastical document; the differences between Catholics, Orthodox, and Lutherans on eschatological issues are reflected in the meaning of the ringing of funeral bells.
