More Than Just a Happy Ending? The Role of Orgasm Consistency for Sexual Satisfaction, Relationship Satisfaction, and Emotional Intimacy in Mixed-Gender Romantic Relationships

Orgasm consistency is defined as the frequency with which individuals achieve orgasm during sexual encounters with a partner, while orgasm discrepancy is defined as the difference between the orgasm consistency of two partners. Orgasm consistency has been linked to sexual and relational well-being, yet little is known about how orgasm discrepancy in partners were associated with these factors. This study examined whether orgasm consistency as well as orgasm discrepancy in couples was associated with sexual satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and emotional intimacy. Data from 327 couples were analyzed using Dyadic Response Surface Analysis. Higher orgasm consistency was associated with greater sexual satisfaction and relationship satisfaction, particularly among men, and with higher emotional intimacy among women. Contrary to expectations, couples with higher levels of orgasm discrepancy reported higher relationship satisfaction than couples with lower levels of orgasm discrepancy. Findings suggest that higher orgasm consistency may serve as a sexual reward, while orgasm discrepancy may not be perceived as a cost. Gendered sexual scripts likely shape these patterns. Overall, models explained limited variance, indicating that other factors beyond orgasm consistency are critical for sexual and relational well-being.
