Officers in the phalanx of Alexander the Great

This paper analyses the terminology in the Alexander historians and Arrian in particular in order to construct a sound and logical hierarchy for officers in the infantry phalanx of Alexander the Great. It argues that the structure of the phalanx under Alexander was, in fact, slightly different from the structure described in the manuals and in Hellenistic armies that is usually projected retroactively back on to the early Macedonian phalanx.
