GenAI in Higher Education in the Context of East and South Asia: Current Trends and Stakeholders’ Perceptions

Generative AI (GenAI) is rapidly transforming higher education (HE) worldwide, yet evidence from Asia remains limited. This study examines how students, teachers, and other stakeholders in Asia perceive the role of GenAI in HE, identifying current usage trends and analysing how GenAI is incorporated into academic and pedagogical practices. Using a mixed methods design, the study gathered quantitative data through online surveys of undergraduate students and teachers. Qualitative insights were obtained through focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews with a sample of participants, including policymakers, educationists, I/NGO representatives, and IT sector professionals. Findings show that the research participants hold mixed views about the role of GenAI in HE, with some indications of integration into academic practices. The study provides insights into emerging GenAI practices in Asian HE and highlights implications for policy and pedagogical development.
