Beyond the Therapy Room: An Illustrative Example for Designing and Evaluating Technology-Delivered Memory Rehabilitation After Traumatic Brain Injury

PURPOSE: Following conversations at the 2026 International Cognitive-Communication Disorders Conference, this viewpoint advocates for the principled development of technology-based memory rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and presents an illustrative example for maximizing resources in the development of new interventions. METHOD: This viewpoint discusses how technology may address key unmet needs in TBI memory rehabilitation, the design fundamentals for this line of work, and an illustrative example of relevant guiding principles for technology-delivered intervention development. RESULTS: Technology holds considerable potential to extend memory care beyond the therapy room, implement findings from the cognitive neuroscience literature in the memory rehabilitation space, and broaden the real-world reach of memory assessments and interventions. However, it is critical that interventions are carefully designed and tailored to this clinical population and use case. CONCLUSIONS: As rehabilitation models adjust to encompass TBI as a chronic condition, technology-delivered interventions that are developed in collaboration with end users will grow in importance. These tools are especially relevant to memory rehabilitation. To move the field forward, we must conduct intervention development work that is careful, iterative, and inclusive of multiple sources of data and end-user perspectives.
