Evaluation of Advocate Professional Ethics in Sharia Economics: Existing Norms, Code of Ethics, and Their Conformity with Sharia Principles

The increasing complexity of sharia economic disputes in Indonesia requires advocates to possess not only general legal competence but also an adequate understanding of sharia principles and professional ethics. This study aims to evaluate the ethical framework governing advocates in sharia economic disputes, examine its conformity with sharia principles, and identify normative gaps that require further development. This research employs a normative juridical method with a library research approach. The analysis draws on legislation, the Indonesian Advocate Code of Ethics, relevant judicial materials, sharia economic regulations, Qur'anic and hadith sources, fiqh literature, and scholarly studies using statutory, conceptual, Islamic legal, and case-document approaches. The findings indicate three principal normative issues. First, the existing professional framework provides general standards of advocate conduct but does not specifically formulate ethical standards for the particular characteristics of sharia economic disputes. Second, Islamic principles of justice (al-'adl), trust (amanah), truthfulness (al-shidq), and commitment to truth (al-haqq) provide an ethical basis for evaluating advocacy conduct beyond procedural compliance. Third, the development of sharia economic advocacy requires a clearer integration between professional competence, ethical responsibility, and institutional supervision. The study contributes a normative framework for strengthening advocate ethics in sharia economic disputes by connecting the existing professional code with Islamic legal and ethical principles.
