Mișcarea de Integrare Spirituală în Absolut (Movement for Spiritual Integration into the Absolute)
The Mișcarea de Integrare Spirituală în Absolut (Movement for Spiritual Integration into the Absolute, henceforth MISA) is a Romanian-origin transnational yoga movement founded in 1990 and based on the teachings of Gregorian Bivolaru (b. 1952), also known as Grieg. Emerging in the aftermath of the collapse of the Communist regime in Romania, MISA developed into one of the largest contemporary yoga networks in Europe, combining yogic practices, tantric teachings, and a range of esoteric and alternative knowledge traditions. Its stated aim is the spiritual transformation of practitioners and their eventual integration into an all-encompassing consciousness referred to as the "Absolute." MISA's curriculum includes āsanas, prāṇāyāma, mudrās, bandhas, mantra practice, meditation techniques, and teachings on astrology, ayurveda, alchemy, angelology, and related subjects. The movement is strongly practice-oriented and emphasizes personal spiritual experience as a source of knowledge and transformation. MISA is particularly known for its doctrine of "sacred eroticism," which interprets sexuality as a spiritual force that can be consciously transformed and integrated into a broader path of self-realization. Since the 1990s, MISA has expanded into a global network operating under various organizational names, including Atman, Tara Yoga, and Natha Yoga. MISA-affiliated schools currently operate in approximately thirty countries across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia and have reached tens of thousands of practitioners. The movement has also been the subject of sustained legal, political, and media controversies, particularly concerning allegations of sexual exploitation, psychological manipulation, and abuse involving its founder and some associated organizations. At the time of writing (June 2026), MISA's founder Gregorian Bivolaru is involved in ongoing criminal proceedings in France concerning allegations of human trafficking, rape, unlawful confinement, kidnapping, and abuse of weakness within an organized religious group. These controversies have generated sharply divergent interpretations among practitioners, journalists, legal authorities, and scholars, making MISA a significant case study in the contemporary study of religion, sexuality, and new religious movements.
