Digital Dentistry - The Dawn of a New Clinical Epoch: A Review of Contemporary Advances
Abstract Digital technology has significantly transformed contemporary dental practice by improving diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, clinical efficiency, and patient care. Digital dentistry includes technologies such as digital radiography, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), intraoral scanners, computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), digital smile design, virtual articulators, laser systems, and computerized occlusal analysis. These advancements have enhanced precision, reduced treatment time, improved communication between clinicians and laboratories, and increased patient satisfaction. Digital workflows enable accurate data acquisition, streamlined restorative procedures, minimally invasive treatment approaches, and better patient education. However, challenges such as high implementation costs, technical complexity, software compatibility issues, and the need for specialized training continue to limit widespread adoption. Despite these limitations, ongoing developments in artificial intelligence, 3D printing, and digital workflow integration are expected to further improve the efficiency, predictability, and quality of modern dental care.
