Türkiye in Africa: strategic realignment through soft power, security, and south–south partnerships

Objectives This study aims to analyze Türkiye’s strategic engagement in Africa, focusing on its evolving foreign policy approach through soft power, security cooperation, and South–South partnerships. It seeks to understand how Türkiye positions itself as an influential actor in Africa and the implications of this engagement for regional and global geopolitics. Methods The study employs a qualitative analytical approach, combining theoretical perspectives with case study analysis. It draws on academic literature, policy reports, and empirical examples from selected African countries to examine Türkiye’s diplomatic, economic, and security strategies. Results The findings indicate that Türkiye has successfully expanded its presence in Africa by leveraging soft power tools such as humanitarian aid, development assistance, and cultural diplomacy, alongside growing military and security cooperation. This multidimensional strategy has strengthened Türkiye’s bilateral relations and enhanced its geopolitical influence, particularly in countries such as Somalia, Libya, and Ethiopia. Conclusion The study concludes that Türkiye’s engagement in Africa reflects a broader strategic realignment aimed at diversifying its global partnerships and increasing its international influence. Its integrated approach—combining soft power, security, and economic cooperation—offers an alternative model of engagement within the framework of South–South relations, though it also faces challenges related to sustainability, competition, and regional dynamics.
