France in Crisis: Rising Protests, Economic Hardship and Political Uncertainty

Abstract France is experiencing a period of serious social and political tension following large demonstrations over the cost of living, education, public services and government policies. What began with student protests over school conditions has developed into a wider movement reflecting dissatisfaction among different sections of society. Demonstrations held on 17 October 2026 were followed by violent incidents, including clashes with police, damage to public buildings and the looting of businesses. The unrest has placed President Emmanuel Macron and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu under renewed pressure to restore public order while addressing citizens' concerns. The situation also raises important questions about economic inequality, the responsibility of governments, the right to peaceful protest and the limits of police power. This article examines the background, causes, consequences and political implications of the unrest, along with possible measures for achieving a peaceful and lasting solution.
