Henry Clifton Sorby: Geologist, Microscopist, Metallographer and Yorkshireman
This brief paper is a summary of the life and achievements of Henry Clifton Sorby and was presented at The International Metallographic Society’s 50th Sorby Symposium at ASM International’s annual IMAT meeting, October 2025. The oral presentation of this paper served as an introduction to the lecture by the 50th Sorby Medalist, Professor Hamish L. Fraser, so it is intentionally short. A quick search of the web will reveal many more authoritative and comprehensive publications describing Sorby’s life and achievements in the various categories that form the title of this paper. These include various books, chapters and papers [ 1 ]– 5 and, more recently, a blog [ 6 ] and a YouTube video of a presentation [ 7 ].
