A Poisson-gas approach to medium-induced gluon radiation
The precision era of jet-quenching phenomenology requires a quantitative control of medium-induced gluon radiation. We consider the BDMPS-Z spectrum in the soft-gluon limit for a Yukawa (Gyulassy–Wang) potential. Writing the Yukawa dipole cross section as a Laplace superposition of Gaussians, we express the fully resummed spectrum as an average over Poisson-distributed configurations of Gaussian scattering centers, each of which is solved in closed form. This yields a master formula for the spectrum both differential in the transverse momentum k⊥ and integrated with a cut on k⊥, valid for static and expanding media with arbitrary profiles. Its evaluation by Monte Carlo sampling of the configurations is efficient and trivially parallelizable. The method reproduces the first order in opacity and published results without kinematic cuts, while with a cut we find sizeable deviations from previous results at small gluon energy fraction. We argue that the same construction extends to the more complex building blocks of an in-medium parton cascade, such as finite energy fraction and emissions off color antennas, and provides a natural starting point for analytical approximations.
