The missing manifesto

In recent years, extreme-right lone actors have increasingly used manifestos to justify violence. Yet research on this subgenre remains notably limited from a genre perspective, including within Rhetorical Genre Studies (RGS). This article seeks to strengthen a much‑needed dialogue between professionals who encounter extreme-right lone actor manifestos in their work – such as law enforcement – and established genre research. Drawing on a Danish court case centred on manifestos, the article demonstrates how insights from genre research can equip practitioners to navigate more confidently the genre’s deployment by extreme-right lone actors. For scholars of the manifesto, attention to this subgenre can likewise deepen understanding of its function as a tool in a contemporary anti‑emancipatory project.
