Student-AI collaboration in learning: A case of a student solving a Math+CT task

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the emerging technologies that has gained significant interest in education. Its potential in supporting students' learning urges researchers to explore and investigate how it can be used effectively. In this study, we utilized ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot, embedded in the digital platform Fobizz to support students in solving mathematics and computational thinking (Math + CT) tasks. This study was part of a larger investigation into integrating CT into mathematics lessons. Through an educational design research approach, we developed Math + CT tasks that enable students to program spreadsheets to read numbers into text with the help of AI. One high school student participated in this pilot study. Data were collected from the student's prompts and communication with Chatbot-AI, as well as data from the cloud spreadsheet file. The data were analyzed through thematic analysis. Four themes emerged from the data, providing insight into how student-AI interaction has contributed to the use of AI in education.
