Penerapan Teknologi Filtrasi Air Sederhana Sebagai Upaya Edukasi Pengelolaan Limbah Air Bagi Siswa di SMP Negeri 7 Jember

This community service activity aimed to enhance junior high school students' understanding of water pollution and purification through simple water filtration technology at SMP Negeri 7 Jember. The program involved 25 Student Council (OSIS) members from grades VII and VIII over a three-week period, employing a participatory approach that integrated socialization, demonstration, project-based learning, and hands-on practice using simple filtration media (plastic bottles, gravel, sand, activated charcoal, cotton, and gauze). Student comprehension was evaluated using a content-validated ten-item multiple-choice test, complemented by structured rubrics for assembly, teamwork, and presentation skills. Results demonstrated an increase in the mean comprehension score from 41% on the pre-test to 89% on the post-test. Because a one-group pre-test–post-test design without a control group or inferential statistical testing was employed, this gain is interpreted descriptively rather than as a verified causal effect. Qualitatively, students exhibited heightened engagement, collaboration, and self-confidence during presentations. This activity indicates that simple appropriate technology serves as an effective contextual learning medium to foster environmental awareness and water management at the secondary school level.
