A Glimpse into Jewish and non-Jewish Togetherness in Vienna around 1900
For a long time, the dominant historical narrative about Jews in Vienna around 1900 - one that is in some cases still conveyed today – holds that they largely lived among themselves and generally maintained only necessary contacts, above all economic ones, with non-Jews. By drawing on documents concerning the everyday life of Jews, I offer a complementary perspective on their relationships with their non-Jewish environment. At the same time, I seek to explore whether there were forms of coexistence that, even under challenging conditions such as social disruption, forestalled a relapse into ethnic-cultural segregation or even antisemitic hostility.
