Application of Deep Eutectic Solvents to Synthesize Functional Inorganic Materials

Abstract Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) used to synthesize functional materials, such as oxide ceramics and carbon nanomaterials, are reviewed. It is shown that DESs allow for lower synthesis temperatures and control of particle morphology. Key challenges of these methods together with the advantages are systematized: residual impurities, difficulties to control stoichiometry, and high viscosity. The review is supplemented by the analysis of global patent activity and the achievements of Russian scientific schools in this field. Further studies to optimize purification and to improve reproducibility are needed for the widespread adoption of these technologies.
