Beyond 0.85: Adaptive PageRank Damping Factors for Small-Scale Networks with Applications to Football Rankings

Within competitive spatial invasion games like association football, team behavior represents a continuous, cooperative multi-agent coordination problem. Traditional PageRank graph modeling frameworks utilized in multi-agent network analysis frequently suffer from possession-recycling bias, misinterpreting high-volume, low-risk horizontal loops such as safe passing exchanges between defensive clusters as authentic structural prestige. This systemic distortion misallocates spectral probability mass away from critical vertical transition hubs operating in highly contested central zones. To eliminate this topological artifact, we present an Adaptive Dynamic PageRank Architecture optimized for multi-agent flow networks. The proposed framework introduces a Macroscopic Sigmoid Governor that evaluates global edge density in real time to scale the network's teleportation threshold dynamically, alongside an Absolute Outbound Volume Weighting Matrix to anchor relative prestige against true physical execution scale. Validated against empirical open-play event streams harvested via the StatsBomb database from the historic 2011 UEFA Champions League Final (FC Barcelona vs. Manchester United), the adaptive model successfully deflated passive defensive recycling loops while isolating true playmaker hubs in complete alignment with real-world tactical outcomes. Concurrently, an integrated Floyd-Warshall node-deletion sequence exposes a clear structural dependency polarity, revealing a high degree of positional redundancy across the supportive roster while mathematically isolating a singular central orchestrator as the network's definitive point of failure. Stress-tests across expanding synthetic topologies up to 5,000 nodes confirm that the dynamic governor guarantees complete numerical stability against topological trapping across all macro-scaling benchmarks, successfully trading a nominal 1-to-2 loop runtime overhead on simple layouts for context-aware analytical precision.

Abstract

Within competitive spatial invasion games like association football, team behavior represents a continuous, cooperative multi-agent coordination problem. Traditional PageRank graph modeling frameworks utilized in multi-agent network analysis frequently suffer from possession-recycling bias, misinterpreting high-volume, low-risk horizontal loops such as safe passing exchanges between defensive clusters as authentic structural prestige. This systemic distortion misallocates spectral probability mass away from critical vertical transition hubs operating in highly contested central zones. To eliminate this topological artifact, we present an Adaptive Dynamic PageRank Architecture optimized for multi-agent flow networks. The proposed framework introduces a Macroscopic Sigmoid Governor that evaluates global edge density in real time to scale the network's teleportation threshold dynamically, alongside an Absolute Outbound Volume Weighting Matrix to anchor relative prestige against true physical execution scale. Validated against empirical open-play event streams harvested via the StatsBomb database from the historic 2011 UEFA Champions League Final (FC Barcelona vs. Manchester United), the adaptive model successfully deflated passive defensive recycling loops while isolating true playmaker hubs in complete alignment with real-world tactical outcomes. Concurrently, an integrated Floyd-Warshall node-deletion sequence exposes a clear structural dependency polarity, revealing a high degree of positional redundancy across the supportive roster while mathematically isolating a singular central orchestrator as the network's definitive point of failure. Stress-tests across expanding synthetic topologies up to 5,000 nodes confirm that the dynamic governor guarantees complete numerical stability against topological trapping across all macro-scaling benchmarks, successfully trading a nominal 1-to-2 loop runtime overhead on simple layouts for context-aware analytical precision.
