Recent Advances in Cordless Gingival Retraction for Fixed Prosthodontic Procedures: A Comprehensive Review

Abstract A comprehensive review of contemporary literature was undertaken to explore the physicochemical properties, gingival displacement, haemostatic effects, periodontal response, impression accuracy, and digital workflow applications of cordless gingival retraction systems. Manufacturer information was also assessed for product specific characteristics, delivery systems, packaging, and recommended use as per recommendations. This review provides an updated overview of cordless gingival retraction systems, with emphasis on their materials, mechanisms, delivery systems, clinical applications, advantages, and limitations. Conventional retraction cords, although widely used, are technique-sensitive and may cause mechanical trauma when excessive pressure is applied. These limitations have led to the development of cordless gingival retraction systems as alternative approaches to soft tissue management. Addressing the challenges among product limits direct comparison, highlighting the need for standardised clinical research to establish evidence-based selection criteria for providing precise restorations.
