Fluoroalkynes: The Last Frontier of Organofluorine Chemistry?

Molecules containing carbon-fluorine bonds are of global importance in pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and polymers and are widely studied. However, little is known about fluoroalkynes where a fluorine atom is directly bonded to a carbon atom that forms part of a carbon-carbon triple bond. Pioneering studies in the 20th century established that these compounds are typically unstable, but their chemistry has remained largely unexplored to date. Here, we outline methods to prepare a diverse range of fluoroalkynes for the first time, rationalize the reasons behind their low stability, and demonstrate six different classes of reactions of fluoroalkynes and their difluorocyclobutadiene dimers.
