Exploring the digital shift: an analytical study on the implementation of Construction 4.0 enabling technologies

Purpose This study aims to investigate the evolving landscape of digital transformation in the construction industry, with a specific focus on the implementation and impact of Construction 4.0 enabling technologies. In addition, the study formulates a strategic framework aimed at facilitating the systematic and effective adoption of the Construction 4.0 concept across various segments of the construction sector. Design/methodology/approach A dual research methodology was used in this study, integrating both quantitative and qualitative approaches to ensure comprehensive data collection and analysis. A total of 256 respondents from 64 construction companies participated in the questionnaire survey, while expert interviews were conducted with 20 industry professionals who have been actively engaged in the implementation of Construction 4.0 technologies over the past three years. Findings The study revealed that building information modeling is the most extensively adopted Construction 4.0 technology across the surveyed construction firms. By contrast, cloud computing, big data analytics and cybersecurity were not reported as being used by the surveyed firms, indicating areas requiring further technological development and adoption. Research limitations/implications This study is subject to certain limitations. As it is based on self-reported data, there is a possibility of response bias or subjective interpretation from participants. Additionally, the research is limited to the context of the Indian construction industry, which may restrict the generalizability of the findings to other regions or industrial sectors with different technological, economic or regulatory environments. Practical implications This research provides valuable insights for industry professionals, researchers and policymakers seeking to leverage the full potential of Construction 4.0 technologies. Moreover, it presents a strategic implementation framework that serves as a practical guide for the adoption and integration of Construction 4.0 principles within civil construction projects, promoting innovation, efficiency and sustainability. Originality/value This study provides an in-depth examination of the adoption and utilization of Construction 4.0 technologies within the Indian construction industry and proposes a strategic roadmap to facilitate their more effective and systematic implementation across the sector.
