Performance Under Pressure: Cognitive and Emotional Mechanisms of Performance Decline and Evidence-Based Strategies for Mitigation Across Domains

This review synthesizes research on performance under pressure across sport, strategic games, and performing arts. Rather than reflecting a loss of skill, performance decline under pressure arises from disruptions to attentional control, working memory overload, excessive self-monitoring, anxiety-driven threat appraisals, fear of failure and evaluation, and heightened emotional reactivity to errors. Evidence-based strategies—including attention and emotion regulation, pre-performance routines, and cognitive reframing—are reviewed as mechanisms for mitigating these effects. Findings indicate that pressure responses are highly individualized and context-dependent, such that no single intervention is universally effective. Instead, strategies aligned with dominant mechanisms and situational demands yield the most reliable benefits. The review concludes that personalized, data-informed, and context-aware approaches are essential for sustaining performance and wellbeing under high-stakes conditions.
