Cinematic Horizons: AI-Generated Environments in Virtual Production

The integration of AI-generated video backgrounds in virtual production (VP) represents a transformative shift in filmmaking, yet its creative and technical potential remain underexplored. While traditional VP relies on pre-recorded footage or real-time 3D rendering, which can be resource-intensive and restrictive in terms of adaptability, AI-generated video backgrounds enable filmmakers to generate dynamic, photorealistic environments on demand. However, critical questions arise regarding their practical applications, aesthetic value, and impact on industry workflows. This research investigates the use of AI-generated video backgrounds within virtual production, focusing on creative potential, technical feasibility, and industry and educational impact. AI-driven video generation allows filmmakers to generate unique and contextually relevant environments with minimal manual intervention. This capability has the ability to reduce costs, expand creative possibilities, and streamline production workflows.
