Emerging technologies as educational tools in cardiovascular health: empowering patients and training professionals
Health education has emerged as an essential component in the management of cardiovascular disease (CVD), especially in contexts where physical access to medical care may be limited. This study, conducted in Ibagué, Colombia, evaluated the role of emerging technologies in improving education for both patients and health professionals. Through expert interviews, technology watch, and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), five technologies were prioritized for institutional implementation in cardiovascular care; their educational potential for patients and healthcare professionals was then analyzed as a complementary dimension. The results highlighted the educational impact of 3D model-ling, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence (AI) in clinical triage and in teaching complex cardiac conditions. The findings suggest that 3D modelling and printing, telemedicine, remote monitoring, and AI-supported tools have relevant educational potential in cardiovascular care. In particular, 3D-printed cardiac models may help improve patient understanding of complex conditions and may contribute to reducing uncertainty and supporting treatment adherence. Telemedicine and remote monitoring may facilitate autonomous learning, self-care, and patient empowerment, while AI applied to electrocardiogram analysis may support professional training through automated feedback and decision-support processes. In conclusion, the strategic integration of emerging technologies could strengthen cardiovascular education, support clinical communication, and contribute to better-informed care processes, provided that these tools are implemented with adequate infrastructure, professional training, and patient-centred educational strategies.
