Iberian copper and Bronze Age Europe: Late Bronze Age mining and supply at Las Minillas (Badajoz, Spain)

Despite abundant copper deposits, the deep history of copper mining in Iberia has not been as extensively studied as in other European ore-rich areas. Here, the authors present new radiocarbon dates that demonstrate Late Bronze Age copper mining at Las Minillas, near Granja de Torrehermosa (southern Spain). Extensive mining infrastructure and abundant stone tools further identify Las Minillas as one of the largest Late Bronze Age copper-mining complex securely dated in Spain. The authors argue for a re-evaluation of links between southern Iberia and other European copper-producing and consuming regions, highlighting its potential as a major Late Bronze Age copper-producing hub.
