AI-Assisted Chinese-Western Cultural Comparison Course: A Conceptual Framework

This paper develops a framework for an AI-assisted Chinese-Western cultural comparison course by bringing together Byram’s intercultural communicative competence model, Vygotsky’s constructivism, and Huang et al.’s theory of cultural competence development. It identifies five interrelated course goals: cultural knowledge, cross-cultural practical ability, critical cultural awareness, AI collaboration literacy, and human-AI symbiosis awareness. To achieve these goals, three teaching strategies are proposed. First, content should be reconstructed through multimodal and professionally adapted resources; second, the learning process should be immersive and adaptive; third, assessment should be data-driven and multidimensional to evaluate the goals. The implementation conditions of these strategies are further discussed in terms of teacher AI competence, human-AI boundary negotiation, algorithmic bias mitigation, and differentiated task design. It provides a structured basis for AI-assisted Chinese-Western cultural comparison teaching and for future empirical testing of its effects.
