Toward an interdisciplinary taxonomy of gender identity recognition: transgender, non-binary, gender diverse, and third gender persons. A scoping review protocol

This record contains the revised version (2.0) of the protocol for a scoping review that will systematise and classify the contemporary approaches to the definition and recognition of the identities of transgender, non-binary, gender diverse, and third gender persons across law, medicine, psychology, sociology, cultural anthropology, and religious studies. The protocol follows the Arksey and O’Malley framework as refined by Levac et al. and the JBI methodology for scoping reviews, and it is reported in accordance with PRISMA-P and PRISMA-ScR. Seven databases (ProQuest, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCOhost, Cambridge Core, and HeinOnline) will be searched without date or language restrictions using three disciplinary search blocks, supplemented by citation snowballing, book searches, hand-searching of international and regional journals, and grey literature. Sources in languages that the authors do not read will be machine-translated according to a documented procedure. The protocol was registered prospectively on OSF Registries on 13 June 2026 (https://doi.org/10.17605/OSF.IO/JCU97). This version was revised in response to peer review at PLOS ONE (manuscript PONE-D-26-29776) and supersedes the registered version in the following respects: the date restriction has been removed from all search blocks; the English-language restriction has been replaced by a documented translation procedure; the scope has been defined as contemporary definitions and recognition frameworks together with their direct predecessors, with mythological and pre-modern categories excluded; the search strategy has been expanded (HeinOnline, the EBSCOhost databases, culture-specific terms in transliteration and original scripts, regional journals and publishers); research questions 1 and 3 have been reformulated; the data-charting form has been extended; and the charting workbook (Microsoft Excel) and the coding software for the synthesis (QualCoder) have been specified. The record includes the full search strategy (S1 Appendix) and the completed PRISMA-P checklist (S1 Checklist). At the time of deposit, only preliminary scoping searches had been run; no records had been screened or charted. Because a finalised OSF registration cannot be edited, this record documents the amendment and cites the registration as a related identifier (Is new version of: 10.17605/OSF.IO/JCU97). Any further amendments will be deposited as new versions of this record, each specifying the content, rationale, and review stage of the amendment.
