Instinct as the Source of Energy, Not as the Steering Wheel: A Three-Slot Framework of Instinct–Intention–Behavior, and Where Education Can Enter
Existing theories of education seldom answer, head-on, where the drive to grow comes from, or how it is snuffed out by education itself. This paper proposes a three-slot framework. Human innate equipment fills only two slots — physiological mechanisms and instincts — and leaves the third empty; consequently, instincts deliver intentions rather than fixed behavioral directions (instinct → intention → behavior). The strength of an instinct is not directly observable: its reading is the strength of the intention it issues — whether the "wanting" arrives, how urgently, and whether it persists after rejection. Intentions drive attempts. Demonstrations reach a person in mutually exclusive abundance; mutually exclusive orders cancel, and behavior loses direction before it can even be aimed — so the innate equipment, while loading no content, must load a selective filter. The fate of an attempt is decided by trial-and-error verification through the environment's response. A single response does not count; only a number of responses running in the same direction formats a behavior and files its conclusion for later retrieval. The scales on which a response's worth is judged are closed at three: material basis, living space, and social standing — moral terms are not among them. The framework explains a common mechanism behind "the child who has no drive to grow": verification returns "invalid" repeatedly → the child withdraws the reporting of needs → a surrender misread as becoming well-behaved. It also locates where education can legitimately enter: the instinct slot cannot be dismantled; what can be changed are intention strength and behavioral expression, and the specification of intervention is that every round of demonstration be verifiable on the spot by the learner — count settled trials, not repetitions. The paper further advances a design-level critique of Calhoun's Universe 25 enclosure: with no predators, no difficulty of acquisition, and a fixed, unlimited supply, the apparatus generates no gain differential, so no behavior within it can be adjudicated as effective or not — the experiment effectively manipulated the variable of gain-space, yet filed its conclusion under population density. The paper states, item by item, the conditions under which the framework should be refuted, and declares its limitations: it is a theoretical construction distilled from long-term personal observation, and it does not claim that empirical validation has been completed.
