Why strengths-based leadership matters: five practical strategies for managers

Purpose This paper aims to examine why strengths-based leadership matters for managers and provides practical guidance for applying strengths-based approaches in everyday management. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper integrates strengths-based leadership literature with management research and practice-based insights. Drawing on strengths psychology, it proposes practical strategies that managers can use to recognise, develop and use employee strengths in the workplace. Findings The paper identifies five practical areas through which managers can apply strengths-based leadership: strengths identification, strengths-based delegation, peer coaching and collaborative learning, strengths-based team cultures and strengths-focused feedback. Focusing on employee strengths can support engagement, collaboration, performance and well-being and may help reduce burnout and disengagement. Research limitations/implications This conceptual paper draws on the strengths-based leadership literature and does not include empirical data. Future research could examine how strengths-based leadership influences employee outcomes, team effectiveness and organisational performance across different workplace contexts. Practical implications Managers can use the proposed strategies to create more supportive and productive workplaces by aligning employee strengths with tasks, encouraging collaborative learning, and embedding strengths-based practices into day-to-day management. Originality/value This paper contributes to management practice by showing how strengths-based leadership can be applied to enhance employee outcomes in everyday work.
