Venezuela: Caution, Capitulation, or Defeat?

The international left that previously supported the Venezuelan governments of Hugo Chávez and Nicolás Maduro is withdrawing its support for the government of Delcy Rodríguez. The government of Donald Trump has openly affirmed the imperial will of the United States, something that, as they acknowledge, dates to the Monroe Doctrine. Venezuela is not sovereign to make meaningful decisions, neither domestically nor on the international stage, nor is it the owner of its own resources. For instance, the August 2026 agreement between the United States and Venezuela, under which a private company NABEP (North American Blue Energy Partners) was granted the right to manage and operate 17 oil fields, unleashed accusations of “selling out”—the Venezuelan Constitution places all hydrocarbons under state control. There is a contradiction between the rhetoric used by Chavismo throughout the years including the emulation of Bolívar's exploits, on the one hand, and the recasting as “suicidal romanticism” the behaviors that for decades the Latin American left considered acts of heroism, on the other hand.
