Everything everywhere all‐at‐once? AI , expertise–output decoupling, and new entrepreneurial strategy trade‐offs in the age of abundance

Abstract Research Summary Generative AI democratizes entrepreneurship by lowering barriers to ideation, creating an environment of abundance. Yet while AI produces speed, scale, and local autonomy, these benefits may come at hidden costs to output quality. Using illustrative vignettes to ground and elaborate, we particularly identify explainability, traceability, and generalizability as costs of abundance. As AI separates observable output from the expertise traditionally required to produce it, the entrepreneur's attention to evaluation becomes the scarce resource. We identify three trade‐offs and their interdependencies for entrepreneurs: speed‐to‐understanding, scale‐to‐oversight, and local autonomy‐to‐system‐wide relevance. Implications for human accountability of AI systems and governance (organizational design) challenges for entrepreneurs are discussed. Managerial Summary AI allows entrepreneurial firms to produce ideas and other outputs faster and at greater scale than ever before. As AI separates output from the expertise traditionally gained while creating it, the scarce resource shifts from generation to evaluation. This creates new managerial tensions: speed versus understanding, scale versus oversight, and local autonomy versus system‐wide relevance. These tensions help explain concerns about AI “going rogue”: simply keeping a human in the loop is not enough if the human expertise no longer includes the ability to understand, trace, question, and override the system. Entrepreneurs are challenged to design organizations that preserve meaningful human expertise and accountability.
